What a GaN charger changes — and what it does not

Smaller chargers can deliver serious power, but the label alone does not guarantee the right ports or charging speed.

Why GaN matters

Gallium nitride components can help chargers operate efficiently in a smaller package than older designs. The practical benefit is usually size: one compact charger may replace several bulky adapters.

Read the power table

Multi-port chargers redistribute power when several devices are connected. The headline wattage may apply to one port used alone. Find the output combinations and check whether your laptop still receives enough power when a phone is connected.

Bring the right cable

The charger and cable work as a system. A cable with a lower power rating can limit charging, even when the adapter supports more. For higher-power USB-C charging, use a properly rated cable from a trustworthy source.

Do not buy wattage you cannot use

Add the realistic needs of the devices you charge together. Extra headroom can be useful, but a much larger charger may add cost and weight without improving your current devices.
